Shaft and grip
Every burner valve ends in a short shaft that comes through the control panel, and the knob presses onto it. On the Viking ranges covered by the service manual consulted here, that shaft is hollow: the screw that sets a burner’s lowest flame is reached down its centre with the knob off. That is a technician’s adjustment, not an owner’s.
Where the damage goes
A shaft rarely fails by itself. The grip inside the knob does, usually after someone has leant on a stiff valve for months. The knob then spins while the valve stays put, and replacing it fixes only half the story.
