What sits behind the lens
The oven lights on current Viking gas ranges are halogen. Viking’s Use and Care guides show two in the cavity, each a bulb in a metal box behind a snap-on glass cover, switched from the control panel. Viking’s service notes for its self-clean gas ranges add a transformer that powers those lights, while older ranges used a cover that screws off the socket. Nothing local makes any of this fail sooner.
Bulb, socket or switch
Viking’s manuals give three reasons a light stays dark, the bulb, the switch or the socket, and one reason it stays lit: the switch. Start with the bulb, since the guide makes that an owner job. If a new bulb stays dark, the socket, the switch or, on self-clean models, the transformer comes next, all behind panels. The light switch is its own part, separate from the oven selector switch that picks the cooking mode. A dark oven light is one of the small faults worth listing on a Viking range that came with the house; anything past the bulb is part of an oven repair.

What you can do yourself
- Turn the range off at the breaker and let the oven cool completely.
- On ranges with snap-on covers, unsnap the glass with a screwdriver in its access groove, as Viking's guide shows, and pull the bulb straight out.
- Fit a halogen bulb matching the volts and watts printed on the cover, holding it in a soft cloth rather than bare fingers.
- Snap the cover back on, then restore the breaker.

When to call
